Female Airsoft Player overview
Name: Rachael James
Age: 26
Location: Essex
Airsoft sites played at: Airsoft Essex – Airsoft Billericay
Shadowopz Airsoft / Stirling events plan to go to others with NAG

How long have you been in Airsoft:
Only about 10 months
How you got into Airsoft:
Went along with some guy mates to see what all the fuss was about. Got fed up of listening to them bragging about shots and gear. I thought – I could do this, and it might shut them up to get taken down by a girl! It did too!
Do you play alongside many girls?
Not enough- but the ones I have played with are way above the level of any of my male mates! You just don’t see girls doing things like this – why???. It’s only a bit of mud and the occasional bb sting!
What you like about Airsoft:
Keeps you physically fit – works out muscle groups you didn’t even know you had. Good sporting event – men don’t like to lose which makes it all the more fun to kick their asses!
Don’t like about it:
Facilities at the sites (where are all the toilets?!?! we’re not actually out in Basra!) All the waiting around in Mil Sims lol!
The preferred weaponry: (long arm, backup, possible special weapons like a 40-mill) No Idea – too much stuff I haven’t tried yet!? Love the pistol though (baby hi-cap) and the M4 for woodland. Guess the mp5 would have been better for that black ops stuff – I just don’t get on with them on the long shots
Why you prefer to use these weapons:
Pistol is just great fun to use -I love the recoil! M4 shoots so straight you can get good shots in from way back! Sneaky
Clothing and gear set up (Chest rig etc):
I’m a bit of a blank canvas at the mo – just working out what I’ll need to buy and why. Basic woodland colours and I’ve inherited some multi cam (which fits nicely) and I did like wearing the full-on black gear for that training at Coventry
Why you choose to wear these:
Most stuff (mags, drinks etc.) fits in the camo jacket pockets – but do want a rig so that I can start to use comms which makes it so much easier to round people up with your buddy and take them out! Also I like the idea of getting to use a few flash bangs and grenades soon…
Has it had any of your kit & guns had modifications: Probably! I got it from a friend so not sure
Do you see a need for anything specifically in Airsoft that might help girls, clothing, guns, gear, training:
Better facilities at sites – because we can’t pee standing up, and if girls are going to get into this as a hobby and a sport not strange man-role playing) then you have to encourage things like loos and taps! Also it’d be nice if stuff fitted properly. I feel like I’m out in bed sheets in some of the camo it’s so not made to fit women…
What are your feelings on NAG: Love it! This is what the sport needs if it wants to entice women. I know I can ask any questions and advice without having scorn poured upon me by guys who only speak in letters and numbers! I am trying to rope every girl I know into airsoft as it beats slogging at the gym and we’ll be able to fend for ourselves if ever there’s a zombie uprising! Christina who started the whole thing is a tiny tiger and full of good info. She only laughs a little bit when i make military faux pas and she gives good advice and lends gear so I can try before I buy.
What’s your favourite style ( ie woodland, urban, MILSIM, Skirmish) & why: I like woodland loads, not been to an urban game yet but hear they’re the most relentless… looking forward to one soon.
Worse injuries: Nothing more than a whacked head from slipping over on wet floors (must have been the high heels LOL) and a small round pink mark on my back from being sniped!
Any war stories? : Was great fun defending a “militant leader corpse” (shop dummy) while having bbs hailed on us in a tiny shack relentlessly for about an hour! The only time we got to shoot was when the enemies were changing mags!

My Airsoft Cherry
My first thoughts as I booked the airsoft game were Christ what the hell am I doing….why on earth would a girl want to play airsoft?? I mean its a mans domain big butch military type men were the image I had of airsoft gamers not blondes with false nails and a love of high heels. How wrong could I be? Well as it turns out very wrong. Ok so it’s still a male dominated environment but there is an uprising of women taking part in the sport thanks to the NAGS (National Airsoft Girls).
I had been lucky to have been put in contact with Christina the founder of the NAGS and she, like most of us women out there was supportive and took me under her wing she gave me advice on all aspects of playing my first airsoft game.
The plan was to meet with some of the NAGS the day before for the calendar shoot and camp out overnight. All of this had been arranged by the NAGS all I had to do was pay for the campsite on arrival and pay for the airsoft game brill so no feeling like an idiot when asked if I was on the Black DPM team or the Dessie Combat team (I would not of had a clue!!).

AWA NAG Away day Romford Essex
Upon meeting the NAGS I was made to feel like a valued member of the team they helped me with the preparation of my gun, helped by showing me room clearing techniques and never once talked down to me or made me feel stupid for asking well stupid questions. My husband had turned up just to watch and see what airsoft was about but he soon caught the bug he had no gear, no gun and no idea about airsoft whatsoever but the NAGS managed to kit him out and provide him with everything he would need.
On the big day we turned up and of course there were blokes everywhere had I been alone I would have been very intimidated but I turned up with the NAGS and boy can a group of girls walking into an airsoft game turn heads. We got down to sorting our kit out filling guns with gas, loading with bb’s, getting the pressure measured on the guns and then this was it I was going to play my first game.
Now somewhere on the way from the safe zone to the hospital where the game was being held these grown men and myself seemed to revert to being 12 year old kids again only this time we weren’t playing with sticks we had proper guns…when the marshall yelled GO adrenaline took over, there was hiding in cupboards, tripping over chairs, grenades, so much laughter that I got a stitch and not once did any of the men make me feel like an inferior player and guess what I did snap a nail well actually it got shot of!
First experience of Airsoft

Wearing an oversized tri-colour jacket and
facemask, I was nervously lead into the dark, subterranean world of the Epsom Tunnels.
Bursting with testosterone and the hollow echoing of spent rounds, I had entered a whole new unfamiliar community.
Laden with armaments and a whole other assortment of trinkets, the safe zone was filled with the green, brown and black of the predominant British Soldier 95 camouflage.
Behind the various face masks and assorted cameo, was the bored professional looking to blow off some steam after the grind of the 9-5 slog, the overenthusiastic teen who has finally
found a way to actively rebel and the most common of all, the loyal Airsofter who loves legally being able to shoot people and have a hell of a lot of fun in the process! One thing became abundantly clear – I had entered a man’s world.
But it’s fair to say I had been bitten by the bug.
Soon after I found myself groping a MP5 and staring starting to realize what the attraction of this sport is down the sight at my garden fence. I was determined to inject some oestrogen into a testosterone filled world. Cosmopolitan magazine soon started to be replaced by Blackhawk catalogues and the desire to spend my (I mean my boyfriends) money in Airsoft Armoury became all consuming.
In Airsoft, no gentlemanly doors are held open, or chairs pulled back, once laden with kit, I’ve blended into an Airsoft world and it is just inexorable battle-play and a never ending stream of piss-taking! A refreshing concept especially when you hear the immortal screams of another Systema victim! Ladies, who needs painkillers, this sport is an excellent cure for PMT!

Does it hurt? Well yeah, of course although it depends where you get hit. I have to say a few well placed rounds striking the buttocks or breasts have been more intimate than some first dates! Needless to say offending players have been targeted thereafter, and yes ladies even the toughest of men can scream like little girls!
These days when I enter a CQB or woodland environment, I am self assured in my appearance, ability and the reliability of my own rig and the masterpiece that is the Systema PTW M4A1 2008 CQB – now mine much to the annoyance of my other half (well he wanted me to get involved!). I say its long overdue, us ladies need to ditch the “oh my god I’ve broke a fingernail” mentality, don some camo and start shooting amongst the boys. It is definitely time to inject some glamour into Airsoft!!

Su Haddrell who has an interesting view on things -:
When Christina first approached me about NAG, I enthusiastically said I’d be up for supporting that because I think any subsection of Airsoft that can be promoted is a good thing. The Inner Me said ‘err, why?’ So since then I’ve sort of half hearted kept abreast of the events and the situation but not really been too involved.
Following a chat with Christina, I started thinking about it a bit more seriously. Ok, so personally I’ve never felt the need to shout from the roof tops “Hey! I’m a girl playing Airsoft!” But theres something to be said for getting new people into the sport. It’s a very word of mouth hobby. Guys into guns or role playing trip over it by accident on the internet and take it from there. Friends get other friends into it. If they’re really lucky guys get their girlfriends into it. But it’s not something girls really go out of their way to look for when they think – I need to get out and do something fun.
So what is NAG to me? Why do I believe we need an all girls team when I’ve said I don’t see the point? The answer is marketing. We primarily recruit for this hobby by networking. Imagine every girl player in the UK wearing a NAG patch. It becomes an identity. You get a bunch of players coming to the game and the girls are wearing NAG patches then you KNOW they’re as into it as you are. ?

Why girls should play airsoft
By Christina
I can see the point about “why should there need to be NAG or a move to push more females into the sport”
This is a very good point.. yes airsoft is for both male and female players, NAG just wants to help the exsisting female players and also new recruits to communicate, support and improve the gameplay.
I found it slightly intemidating when I first started by being surrounded by a mass of men..but with time I got used to it… but still there was something missing..comraidship.. the guys didnt have a problem of me joining them during the game and I am a welcomed part of a large team of 30 odd guys that attend big events here in the U.K.
When your out on the field its amazing and inspiring to watch team formations moving stealthy thru the game, accomplishing tasks and working as a group.
This dosent come over night this is from many months training but also socialising, when you communicate outside the airsoft site you get to know your fellow team mates so well you build up that trust and comraidship…
Some ladies may find this a challenge, I thought personally it was a good idea to try to help assist this by having the website, forum and training schedules. It started off as a much smaller idea of me getting a few more females to join me at my local site but its now become something much bigger.
Many girls are really happy that NAG is there, its comforting that there will be a friendly face there to help support and get you thru your first few skirmishes and help give you advice on what gun to buy or what sort of loadout (I choose certain products as I know its easier to wear and play a game in because its suitable for a girls body).

I personally have gone out of my way to help girls who were “interested” into doing airsoft, to providing them with loadouts and guns, taking them to a site and showing them the ropes..these are girls who would have otherwise not dared to just turn up at a site by themselves or with another friend. I know some of my other girls have done this also. It has provided these newbies a sense of “belonging” to something and then they have come along week after week.
For the more experience girl airsofters I know we benifit from teaching each other tactics, or just generally have a laff about airsoft, just as you guys do no different. Some girls maybe interested in having training and pushing themselves harder in the sport by learning tactics but just dont have the facilities or contacts to do so, so were helping facilitate that. I have become more confident as a person since starting to play airsofting, my fitness and strength has improved and its also given me something to be proud of. The people I talk to about it are genuinely impressed with how realistic the weapns are and how accurate the training can be.
I know my other half was comforted by the fact that I was going to catterick with a few other girls when we went for the Scotland vs England game, as there were 150 other guys there too, its a fact of life, us ladies have families also and having to fit airsoft around a busy homelife, its nice to have someone else there to talk to about these sort of things too. I have found Airsoft to be more than a sport but more of a way of life..you find yourself driving around in the car, seeing a derelict building thinking “oh that would be great for CQB” or like my two little ones ( who are just as mad about airsoft as me ) turning into a female version of Bare Grylls and taking them down the woods to make a mini site for the to let some steam off in.

NAG is a good thing, im not out to proove a point or to become a sufferagete movement amongst airsoft theres loads of girls out there and have been out there for some time, and maybe NAG isnt for every girl but the posistive responses I have had and the smiling faces I see on the girls after a good day skirmishing/milsiming makes it worth all the hours spent training, researching and speaking to fellow airsofters all worth it.
Its not been an easy task so far but thank you to the support I have been given it certainly helps us girls continue
well thats my rant over, im happy to reply to any of your questions or hear any type of comment..I love a good healthy debate..especially about something I am passionate about..
Christina
